Jkhowland got their new app by running a design contest:
Apps by Lift needs a new app design
Check out Jkhowland's App contest…
Accounting & Financial
We develop iOS applications. We have a number of games as well as a couple utilities. Most of our apps are trivia based games. We are working on a new trivia game right now, and we'd love for you to design it for us.
What's your vision?
I'm all about start out with rough design, and work to clean, so don't worry about submitting the perfect design on your first run. This is a blind contest, and I'd love to see what you're thinking sooner rather than later so that we can work through the best ideas. Focus on vintage ad graphic images. This will be a trivia game. We need 8 simple screens and 5 pop-overs (all 5 popovers will have the same basic design). The background of each screen is also already designed, you will simply need to create the graphics to fill the pages. We're hoping to make a unique experience and emotion to the game, the focus is vintage style advertising. Lots of color, and silly emotion. I've included some examples for you to draw inspiration from. They are not the images I want, but I would like some graphics like them. You are designing the interface so that it can symbolize a RED team or BLUE team - I only need one design, I just need you to keep this in mind. Each app will be focused on one of two television stations. The two stations are KUED and KBYU. The graphics for each station can be basically the same. KUED would be considered RED App and KBYU would be considered BLUE App. As you design for either BLUE or RED, think of ways that the colors of the app could be easily changed from BLUE to RED. For example, if there was a man in a blue sweater in one app and a red sweater in the other, or a blue lawn mower in one app, and a red lawn mower in the other. I've imagined the overall interface of the app to be a magazine. The transition from screen to screen like a page turning. I've included frames that show the background of the screens you will create graphics on top of. You basically need to make ad graphics to fill the pages, I will explain below. 1 - Magazine Cover Image (will be used for app icon) 2 - Man or woman holding tech device (60s style) 3 - Television studio (news room, or late night show with TV in shot graphic) 4 - A zoomed in image of the television in image 3 5 - a woman in a operator room 6 - A newsletter signup form 7 - A comparison chart to show how each team is doing. I imagine the same man from 3 standing up with a bar on either side of him. The app graphics will be focused on broadcast. You can look at the Social Media ads, the way the ads are centered around television or a tablet computer. We want the focus of the app to be personal financial success and watching television. The loading page should be a magazine cover (we'll use the magazine cover for the icon), and each screen will be a page. Imagine the cover of Forbes magazine, I've included an example that magnifies the color aspect (RED/BLUE) and emphasizes television. We may also have an example that emphasizes finances. The start screen should be similar to a vintage magazine table of contents, with a graphic at the top, or around the buttons, taking up most of the screen. The buttons are 'Play', and a little info button. An option for this screen is to use one of the social media ads, and focus on the technical capabilities of Zions Direct. An ad similar to the Twitter ad would be very fitting. The letters coming off the tablet could be $ signs and numbers. Please include a place that I can add a reward button later (or text that says 'claim'). The info button will call in a popover. The popover for will contain 3 clickable options and some text describing the app. I imagine it to look like a rip out magazine card. (such as a subscription card) The rest of the popover will be simple with a short description of the app, development, and a link to a website. The Reward button will bring up one of two screens. If the user has never won, it will give them an option to claim their reward. They view will show the email form line, and a small toggle they can check to opt-out. Also included in the view will be an ad for the station. You can imagine an ad for the station will be very similar to the Youtube or Skype ad. Touting the fabulous ability to watch the high quality family friendly television shows online at your computer, or on your TV in your living room - all for free. There will be another view if they have already claimed a prize that will show how the apps are comparing in success: RED vs BLUE. The Play button will take you to a screen I will call the studio screen. The studio screen will first tell the user how to play, explain there is a timer that is counting down. That every time they get an answer right it will flip back to the studio screen and tell the user congratulations, you just beat level such and such, you have such and such more to go. And then it will let them flip back to the game. The game screen will be VERY simple. Using the graphics from the studio screen. The typography is very important. The view will simply show a question, 4 options, and a number (timer). All text. We need to pick a font that matches the general vintage feel, and overall. We may want two fonts: One for the question and timer, and one for the answers. A little more elaborate, and decorative for the question/timer font. Also from the game screen will pop out two more popovers: Final Answer? and Share the app for another chance. Final answer simply asks the user if they are sure the answer they selected is their final answer, and the popover offering another chance displays a facebook, twitter, and a 'no-thanks' cancel button. All of the popovers should have the same feel, a magazine card, that slides out from the left. Similar to a subscription card. You will need to make a very simple newsletter signup form. Something like Path, or a subscription card from a magazine would be perfect. Maybe add a bit of graphics if you have any ideas. You'll also need to make a very simple graphic showing which side (Red or Blue) is doing better. It will be a bar chart with two bars growing up from the ground. Maybe have the man from the studio view standing in between them holding his hands over the bars. That should be it. Let me know if you have any questions. I will be quick to give feedback.
