We are looking for someone to design an amazing book cover with original artwork for our new Crime-Comedy novel “Fresh Squeezed”. The story is about “Juice” Verrone, a former Mafia hitman, now living as a fishing guide in rural Washington State. As he tries to rebuild his life in Wanaduck, WA, Juice is sucked into a web of the local electric utility’s financial shenanigans, incompetent assassins, and a group of Vegan drug dealers. The action centers around the utility’s dam.
The cover needs to convey crime and COMEDY.
Running throughout the book is the logo of Walt’s Master Bait and Tackle fishing store: a smiling smallmouth bass smoking a cigarette (conceptual drawing attached). Walt has had his logos made into a variety of promotional giveaways including, central to the story, a fish-shaped flash drive.
One idea we have for the front cover is to use this logo – artfully rendered and textured in 3D – as the main image on the cover. We considered having an image of a fish-shaped flash drive but think a 3D cartoon of the logo might be more interesting and funny. We also want a color scheme that is fish-like but with more pop--bright green, rainbow-hued, and so on. We also discussed applying a texture like a cheap Made-in-China plastic/rubber mold job to the 3D rendered fish. You’re the artist and designer so we are open to suggestions.
The image of the fish could hover over something like an image of a dam, a bulls-eye target, a pile of 100-dollar bills, or a solid color with a sniper-scope cross-hairs superimposed over the fish. We’ve talked about having bullet holes in the background (with the fish having a surprised/relieved look on its face) or even having a bullet hole in the fish.
The front cover must also include”
The title “Fresh Squeezed”,
the tag “The first Juice Verrone novel” and
the authors “Bonnie Biafore” and “James Ewing”
For the back cover we would like a spread of some of the ancillary images/themes of the story. This can include small but recognizable versions of the following themes:
Hydroelectric dam – definitely, maybe larger than the rest
Clown - preferable
Hot dogs - preferable
Stuffed duck - possible
Green V or VeggieTech logo – preferable
Wind generators - possible
Ferret – possible
Yellow Labrador dog -- possible
The back cover must also have room for a barcode/ISBN, a text area for approximately 300 words, price and publisher name (“Slow Toast Press”, “www.slowtoastpress.com”)
The spine should be eye-catching to prospective buyers and needs to include the title, our last names, and room for a small Slow Toast Press logo.
An additional requirement, in these modern times, is that a version of the front cover works in grayscale for eReader devices. We’ll take your advice as to whether this should be the same cover as the print book or a separate one.
Our deadline for this cover project is June 5, 2012.
This is the first book of a planned three-book series for this main character and this storyline. In the future, we would have additional work to produce covers for the next two books so that the covers in the series have a consistent, integrated style. We also anticipate additional work to include designs for merchandise to support the book/ebook and eventual major motion picture. While your intellectual property rights will transfer to us upon acceptance of your design we will credit your design on print and electronic versions of the novel.
We have uploaded some of our initial thoughts in image form. Please ask away for questions.
