We need a book cover for an ebook that covers this little known but hugely influential 4th Century Christian writer and thinker: Gregory of Nyssa
Yet this book is designed to be modern, beautiful, crisp and designed. The book is designed as a whole mix of the very ancient with the future, as this book is designed to be an introduction to this authors work, to a young, non-academic, non-theological audience. To take the ancient and make it feel timeless.
All previously published books on Gregory's thought has been either from the 1950's, old-style theological and very dry academic work: See here http://is.gd/IGvu6h
This work by contrast should be accessible, modern, clean, even gorgeous.
Gregory was a man well before his time. He was the first Christian and one of the first authors from any field to absolutely condemn slavery as an evil and to call for it's abolition. It took 1,500 years for such a clear statement to occur inside or out of the Church.
He was the first Christian to God loved everyone, and that in the end, everyone, regardless of their belief or unbelief in this world, would be untied with God in the afterlife, that God would bring all humans and all of beyond death into an everlasting good and loving life.
He was a fierce voice for Orthodoxy, and helped define core doctrines of the Church about the Trinity and the nature and divinity of Jesus, but even so famously was quoted saying: "Only Wonder grasps anything. Concepts create idols. Men kill each other over idols. Wonder makes us fall to our knees."
And he was the father of Christian mysticism. About embracing the Unknowning of God as well as the knowing, about how infinite and transcendent God was, giving birth to many traditions of meditation and contemplation.
Lastly as Gregory was an historic figure especially amongst Eastern Orthodox Christians there a huge amount of publc domain ancient icons of him.
We can use some of these images in the art but I would think it would need to be in a fresh unique way if at all.
