What is Mountains For All (MFA)?
A registered 501(c)(3) created for the sole purpose of inspiring, engaging, and facilitating under-represented youth (e.g. minorities and persons of color) in outdoor recreation so as to increase the accessibility of the “outdoor experience” to all.
Outdoor recreation that connects and inspires all youth, building a foundation for a lifetime of active participation in the outdoors.
Current participation in outdoor recreation sees a significant under-representation of various demographics, specially individuals of color. For a number of reasons (access, role modeling, mentoring, economics, awareness, etc), this issue is particularly pervasive in the Pacific Northwest. For future mountain recreation enthusiasts of all backgrounds, we need to actively remove barriers to participation and demystify the experience to eliminate any stigmas of exclusivity. Doing so ensures continued access and appreciation by all through a genuine reflection of culture diversity.
Targeting 4th-grade age students (9-10 years old), who are people of color/of a minority background. Specific focus in lower-economic urban areas.
For Year 1, a weekly (8) week “alpine club”where youth are transported from a central meeting location to the mountain for participation in ski/snowboard lessons.
All costs (lessons, soft goods, hard goods, transportation, etc) borne through MFA, either through fundraising and/or donations.
Year 2 and 3 will add additional opportunities to build an organizational portfolio to recreate year-round (camping, mountain biking, rafting, paddle boarding, surfing, etc).
