Tell us a bit about who you are and the people you reach
Epilepsy is characterized by unpredictable seizures that are like electrical storms in the brain. Epilepsy is a spectrum condition with a wide range of seizure types and control mechanisms varying from person-to-person. Epilepsy affects about 2% of the population; it is the 4th most common neurological problem – only migraine, stroke, and Alzheimer’s disease occurs more frequently. More people have epilepsy than Autism, Parkinson’s, Multiple Sclerosis, and Cerebral Palsy combined. Young adults with epilepsy contend with multiple risk factors. While navigating the normal challenges of adolescence and transition to adulthood, young adults with epilepsy face the challenge of learning self-care from their parents, and with epilepsy, that often means ensuring medication regimens are adhered to, regular sleep schedules, attention to stress management, and avoidance of alcohol. Our Young Leaders Networks are designed for young people who want to make an impact for others with epilepsy and for their communities. Started in 2016-2017, our program has grown to include more than 100 young people from our 4 New England states. Young adults meet in person once per month for 2-3 hours on Saturday afternoons, and they meet on the phone to work on projects in between. Participants work on leadership projects and advocacy work.
