Our company is a small consultancy. The name says it: “Net Gain” means we aim for quantifiable improvements in our clients’ business; “Solutions” means we focus on specific, tangible, concrete deliverables. While we’re technologically centered, we have significant strategic, operational, and financial experience also. The keywords we want to portray for our company: simplicity, elegance, speed, agility, flexibility, opportunity, expertise (particularly technological but also general business/financial), intelligence, forethought, “get it done”, thoroughness. We sometimes think of ourselves as helping clients get “smarter, faster, leaner”, whether to save money or to free up resources to go after new markets or services. Our audience is entrepreneurs and businesses of all sizes, though primarily small and medium. We offer a range of services including outside technology/strategy expertise (“outsourced CIO”) and custom software development and IT projects aimed at pursuing entrepreneurial opportunities or significantly streamlining/automating operations and reducing fixed costs. We do this standalone or integrating with client teams. We want to make the impression that we are skilled, seasoned, trustworthy experts who can deliver fast, be delegated to, and that we can interact appropriately with stakeholders right up to time-pressed entrepreneurs and executives who don’t have time for long, geeky speeches full of acronyms but need to believe that we know all that, can manage it for them, and boil it down quickly and accurately. We’re looking for a logo which is evocative about us and implies technology, but without being explicitly technical or of-the-moment. For example, we are moving into providing cloud computing-based solutions but we do not want a cloud in the logo – that’s far too trendy and frivolous and it will look old before long; nor do we want an obvious computer thing in the logo. But the logo should connote much of the keywords in the second paragraph, and should not be so obviously generic that it could be any company at all. The logo should not include details that are so microscopic that printing business cards or t-shirts will look smudged or indistinct; it should look good at a variety of sizes. Preferred colors are primarily blue, with orange as a secondary or accent color. Red, yellow, green, gray are also good but a great logo would denote both the trustworthy, dependable, stable, strategic side (blue) as well as the energetic, fast, change agent side (orange). The current logo which I uploaded is amateurish, but here’s the thought process. The triangle is a delta symbol, meaning change. The red line into it is a flattening curve; red denotes bad in financial terms, and the flattening shows a topping out. As it comes into the delta (working with us) it switches to a green, ascending curve, so things are getting better. There are of course several flaws with this, as we have found. Most people don’t know that the triangle/delta is the symbol of change (this is too geeky), and the red to green curve is lost on most people also. So do not in any way feel like you need to be true to this logo or its color scheme; this is just to illustrate what we went through before when thinking about a logo. Once we get a new logo we are going to re-do the company site, color scheme, and physical collateral, and if we find a great designer through this contest there we may well want to work with that person on that too. We will need the logo in both vector and bitmap formats in various sizes, so that we can provide it as needed for printing up collateral etc. Lastly, here’s a list of some of the $99 generic logos I thought were interesting either in terms of being evocative (looking at it, an obvious “ah hah” about what the company does), great designs in terms of color and being modern-looking, etc. Again, they are just here as ways to see what sort of appeals to me; don’t think you have to imitate any of them.
