This is a logo for an academic research group called the "Programming Languages and Artificial Intelligence" group (the PLAI group - pronounced "play" -- intended to convey fun, which we are). We are a large AI research group at the University of British Columbia. We are aiming to be a "north american / asia (china in particular)" bridge.

We had a "friend of the lab" got through a design process that resulted in a couple decent logos. The resulting designs are attached. The lab director liked the wave design. The lab liked the robot design. Both are too cluttered. The use of the difference font faces for "P" (for probability, usually times new roman and "lambda" (an important concept in functional programming) are both intentional but not strictly necessary. The original designer was Japanese thus the Japanese rather than Chinese reference in the first logo. The lab doesn't (strictly speaking) do robotics thus the imperfect nature of the second. Bright and crazy colors are great. Think -- we'd like it to look good on a bike jersey too! (and we think the UBC university design schemes are terrible)
