Mojo Games got their new app design by running a design contest:
Create a Unique set of GUI Widgets for Games

Games & Recreational
We are building a GUI toolkit for game developers. We are creating all of the code and functionality, but as part of the package that we're going to sell, we want to include several different UI themes of premade GUI widgets, with various looks & feels. These are elements like progress bars, buttons, indeterminate progress spinners, text fields, panels, draggable windows, etc. (All specified below). We would like to contract with someone who will initially do just one of these UI themes for us. If it turns out well, then we would like to follow up by contracting with you to do all of the remaining themes. For this initial theme, we would like to do a "science fiction" design. We specify all of the GUI widgets that are needed, and all we need are the graphics for them. We need a PSD file with layers. We will handle all functionality and animation - this work is exclusively for the graphics of the UI widgets themselves and nothing else.
For this initial contract, we would like build a set of UI widgets that are themed like a science fiction holographic overlay, the kind that is usually full of blues and whites, but that is up to you - feel free to break the mold. Similar in spirit to the examples below, but only in spirit - we want your original creativity here not a clone of any one of these. They do not necessarily need to be hollow and full of transparency. Clarity is crucial - these need to be useful in a practical sense to accomplish functional user interfaces.
We need a single PSD with layers for *everything* that demonstrates all of the following UI elements. No animation is needed - it is enough to show a partial animated state as long as all layers are present to accomplish the animation ourselves. No iconography other than what's specified below is needed, other than a minimum set that you feel is needed to convey the design (e.g. what color should icons on buttons be and how intense should they be - even if you use the same icon repeatedly as an example). * Button (both with text and with icon content in the button) * Button, same as above, but with emphasis (e.g. to indicate this is the default button on a panel) * Button with dropdown arrow on the right * Toggle button (both on and off states) * 4 direction buttons (left, top, right, down) * Single line text field * Single line text field with validation error (e.g. text and border are red, perhaps?) * Single line text Field with dropdown arrow on the right (with and without validation error) * Progress Bar (both horizontal and vertical) * Circular or otherwise "non rectangular" Progress Bar * Indeterminate progress bar or spinner or otherwise indicator of an ongoing operation with unknown completion time * Slider (both horizontal and vertical) * Panel with and without "close" button on the upper right and with and without a title or caption area on the top * Scrollbars (both horizontal and vertical) * Multiline/scrollable text box * Scrollable content panel, inside of which a grid of graphical elements could be placed from which to choose (horizontal, vertical, and both) - for example, the "icon" view in Mac OS X Finder - this might be a simple box with decorations on its edges hinting that more content can be found by scrolling - you're not responsible for the content within * Checkbox with on and off state * Radio button with on and off state * Panel with tabs for its content * Panel that is a wizard with several pages of sequential content (its fine to only show a single page of content in the PSD) * A "badge" container to hold simple content like a simple number (like the red circular badge on iOS app icons when a notification has been received) - doesn't have to literally round - just something that fulfills this purpose * A scrollable table with rows (you can picture just a few rows with any content) - at least one row must visually indicate that it is currently selected (where the user can select one row at a time) - no columns or headers are needed here (rows are just "content"), but it's fine to depict columns if they make your design pop * Any separators that you feel would be useful for organizing content within panels (e.g. recessed lines, subpanels) - whatever is needed by your design to accomplish something like a sign in vs. register account panel, for example * "Super Emphasis" image or element - something that could be placed behind or on top of any button or element to call attention to it - "hey user, notice THIS button right now!" * Any other "zing" you care to add - we can and will find a way to use it! * A touchscreen "virtual D-Pad" on-screen joystick
What to avoid
We need exclusive, royalty-free ownership of these assets because we are going to resell them as part of a package for programmers and developers. This must be entirely original content, free of any and all licensing restrictions. As mentioned above, we would also love to contract with you for the remaining themes after this one!
