Tell us a bit about who you are and the people you reach
San Jose Dance Theatre is a ballet training academy in the Bay Area. We offer classes to ages 4 through adult, with an emphasis on serious training for those interested in pursuing a career in ballet. This year marks our 52nd production of The Nutcracker, which is the longest running Nutcracker in San Jose and a tradition for many families in the community. We perform for two weekends in a 2600-seat venue and bring in guest artists from professional ballet companies. Our target audience for this production is mainly the local Bay Area community. We want to use this design for posters and postcards as a general catchall advertisement for our production.
What inspires you and how do you envision the design for your business?
We’re looking for a holiday design that is eye-catching, and easy to digest. It should communicate that it’s a holiday event for all ages, and should translate easily to the general public, not just to a ballet-savvy audience.
It’s important that our design be gender-neutral, leaning toward a color palette that is bold, but definitely not girly (no pink ballerinas or pastels). We want it to be obvious this is a holiday event, and information should be easy to read. We lean toward simpler, more professional designs versus something that is cartoony or childlike.
The past two years, we’ve done a simple black and gold design and we’re trying to take a step away from that to show something new. We’re looking for something equally as striking that makes a statement without getting too busy. Feel free to use Christmas/holiday images in the design, or scenes in the ballet.
"San José Dance Theatre presents The Nutcracker"
"San Jose Center for the Performing Arts"

"San José Dance Theatre is a 501(c) non-profit corporation" (somewhere small at the bottom)
You can also incorporate the fact that this is 52nd year of The Nutcracker. On previous posters, we've had phrases like "51 years of magic" or "Believe in the Magic". Attached are pictures of our production that you are free to use.
You can use one of our SJDT logos, but it is not required. Please note that your design will need to be able to also translate onto postcards, t-shirts, ads, and a program cover.
