Poster for the International Day of Democracy

The IPU, the world organization of parliaments, is a global forum for parliamentary dialogue and cooperation. It strives to advance democracy and assist parliaments and parliamentarians in all parts of the world in fulfilling their mandates.

The International Day of Democracy is celebrated on 15 September every year. The IPU has taken a prominent role in mobilizing parliaments to take action on this Day. In doing so, it seeks to encourage dialogue between parliaments and citizens, especially young people, on the meaning and significance of democracy. To assist parliaments, the IPU proposes an annual theme and produces an information brochure and poster. In 2011, the theme is ‘What do citizens expect of their parliament?’. The IPU wishes to engage a designer to create a poster for the International Day of Democracy in 2011. At a second stage, the IPU will create two handouts on the year’s theme.

Design brief The poster will be sent to every parliament in the world. It must therefore be culturally sensitive. It can not portray a single culture, country or region. It could portray multiple cultures. The poster will be displayed in parliaments during the events that they organize on the International Day of Democracy. It should strike a balance between an institutional approach and an original approach that catches the imagination. The concept could be ‘light-hearted but serious’. The target audiences are on one hand members of parliament and people who work in parliaments; and on the other hand, citizens who will visit parliaments on the International Day of Democracy. These will often be young people, schoolchildren or students. The poster should convey the year’s theme, ‘What do citizens expect from their parliaments?’. The theme is a question. The answers are numerous. Expectations are high and often can not be met by parliament. Public dissatisfaction with politicians is widespread. The exact role of parliament is not well known to the general public. The IPU’s overall objective for the International Day of Democracy in general is to encourage dialogue between citizens and parliament. Parliaments need to be able to translate the poster into their own language and adapt it as they wish. The designer will have to make separate files for each language. After agreeing on the design in English, the IPU will provide the text for the French and Spanish versions.
