Community & Non-Profit
Since 1989, VISIONS has set the standard for international and domestic community service programs for students. Summer programs blend ambitious service, cultural immersion and adventure. We live in the heart of under-resourced host communities around the world, completing construction and non-construction projects. We work and socialize with community members and also set aside time for travel and exploration. High school and middle school programs available in South, Central and North America, the Caribbean, Asia, and Africa; French and Spanish language immersion in some locations.
Our own site for starters, as we are not seeking a big overhaul. Study our site, get a sense of how we present ourselves, what is important to us and our clients, and stick with that same general feeling. nytimes.com nature.org newyorker.com -- 3 sites popular w/ our demographic Search: "teen volunteer abroad" "teen travel abroad" "volunteer abroad" to see competitor for ideas --- We do not want to look like these sites. We want to maintain our own look that is more serious, that demonstrates that we are the real deal in terms of service work; not frills; real change. ========= http://www.colourlovers.com/browse (keeping in mind we could keep colors the same'ish) http://www.smashingmagazine.com/category/inspiration/ (get design ui/ux inspiration) http://www.patterntap.com (get page elements inspiration) http://www.unmatchedstyle.com/ (get inspiration from fresh, web 2.0 websites) http://www.bunac.org/volunteer/ (clean website)
Goals: Goals: 1) Apply 2) Contact Us 3) Sign Up for News & Information 4) Learn More -- browse through the pages on the site, especially to Program Locations 5) Move them, inspire them, let them know we are different and we are the real deal. We're not looking for flash; don't want changing pictures (slides), unless they were to change by having a discreet arrow where a user can change the pic. We're not necessarily going for what is totally common right now. 6) We don't want it to look a whole lot different.... just cleaned up, a bit sharper, and cleanly integrating some social media "follows" in a non-sales-y way. Requirements: 1) The homepage needs to be redesigned with UI/UX in mind. 2) The header needs to be slightly redesigned so that it can look clean and fresh and include call to actions. 3) The calls to action should be Apply; Sign Up for News & Updates, Contact Us; and also social media follows (see attachment for examples -- we encourage you to come up with your own effective designs, too) 4) Keep all of the existing links on the site -- they can be repositioned to fit with the design. 5) Create an area for a slide show to showcase images OR create several spaces to display images (no more than 4) 6) Include social media integration on the site (see attached example of Follow Us) 7) Include a map to show where the program locations are (see attachment) 8) Make sure you pay attention the the links: Welcome, Service Work, Culture & Language Immersion, Adventure & Exploration -- when those links are clicked on, different content on the homepage appears -- make sure you take this into account when designing the site and leave room for the content to appear. 9) Look at the bottom right of the main body and you will see the Expand + link -- once it gets clicked on, more content appears -- make sure your design takes this into account, too. 10) (Possibly) Redesign the navigation and make sure to include the sub-navigation (drop down) links. Again, nothing too dramatic. 11) Keep general color scheme, though it could change slightly... remain somewhat earthy; avoid blues (as we'll then look like all the others). And while it's easier to read, we don't want white. 12) Make this site GENUINE and REAL -- NOT COMMERCIAL or overaly sales-y (see additional notes below) 13) Make video slightly more obvious (we have a shorter, 5-minute version of the video, as well)
Biggest Competitors: GlobalRoutes.org and RusticPathways.com (there are other competitors in this field too -- basically if you type in "teen travel abroad" "teen summer programs" -- those sites are competitors. We do not like the design of the two sites above because they appear to be very "commercial" and the photos don't really reflect service. VISIONS is about teens doing community service abroad (not everything is fun and glamorous, but it is meaningful, and there is still a lot of fun, adventure, friendship). Of course, any redesign should help the site with conversions -- get people (parents and teens, usually affluent families) to apply for the programs, to inquire for more information, whether through email, calling, signing up for newsletter. Programs start at $4000 --- we are not seeking a snap judgment to apply immediately, necessarily --- instead (and in addition to applying), we want them to really get to know us; to look through some pictures; feel comfortable with the fact that we are quality and safe (for parents to know), and fun and hearty service (for kids to know); read through some pages; call or email for more info; and, of course, also apply. Focus on the design/placement of certain calls to action on the homepage. The homepage design just needs an updated look with social media components integrated (G+, facebook, twitter, our own blog). We are dealing with a highly education audience... smart adults and savvy teens. Also important to our audience is credibility -- who like them goes on our programs? Our program locations pages have a tab for testimonials relating to each program. We probably should build out the other testimonials page (on main navigation), as well.
