Games & Recreational
Epic Games licenses its game engine technology to a wide range of teams, ranging from individual hobbyists to large scale AAA game development all over the world.
In general, function over form where there are trade-offs. However fully acknowledging humans as visual beings and form being a key aspect driving function and adoption of function. The Editor color scheme is gray and orange. The design doesn't need to adhere to it, but throwing it out as the only color point of reference we have. http://i1.ytimg.com/vi/knI-XUbv2Wg/maxresdefault.jpg http://waynelee3d.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2014/04/UE4-quick-tips-hide-tabs1.jpg
Page 1: The design needs to include a landing page for https://www.unrealengine.com/ The landing page currently hosts the blog, but that can and probably should be a separate page in the design. The main call to action for new users is to try the product and see what it is about, and for existing users it should be a great landing page to connect them with the documentation, forums, answer section, tutorials, roadmap, and other resources on the right navigation bar AND latest development. The goal is to provide a useful page for existing users and make it worth their while to be their home page. Page 2: There needs to be consistent branding / styling and a shared navigation bar across the various sub pages. Basically a template to follow for navigation, colors, branding, styling, layout and such where possible. https://docs.unrealengine.com/latest/INT/ https://forums.unrealengine.com/ https://answers.unrealengine.com/ https://wiki.unrealengine.com/Main_Page Page 3: There is a fairly active blog to keep existing users in touch with what is going on. It probably makes sense to split away from landing page and revisiting design and layout. One of the key roles of the blog is to provide users with insight into our transparent development style. Page 4: https://www.unrealengine.com/ is current blog, maybe going forward https://www.unrealengine.com/blog/ There currently is a blog style layout for the showcase page, but maybe something along the lines of what can be seen at http://unity3d.com/showcase makes more sense. Page 5: The feature / about page should be geared towards new users / people that don’t know what we are about and from a design point of view focus on conveying the breadth of experiences to be realized with UE4. https://www.unrealengine.com/products/unreal-engine-4
What to avoid
Flash and anything else that won't work on mobile.
This is a skunk works project to figure out the viability of crowd-sourced design via competitions. I personally have high hopes for the concept and am looking forward to be able to impress everyone else with the output :-)
