Veteran Toolbox

We are building a site on an existing wordpress theme dedicated to providing resources and information to US veteran and military personnel.

Looking for a crisp layout that looks that is full screen. I would like to have an easily accessibly menu at the top, a featured article section, and maybe a section for recent articles.
I'm really open to anything and want something that will be modern looking with a good flow. It is a site for veterans and military members, so the coloring is probably best to be the same as the US flag.
There is a theme loaded on the webpage now as a placeholder, but that is not an indicator of what theme we will use or necessarily the style we are looking for.

Homepage: As described in the ideas section. Pretty open to different ideas. A header menu near or at the top is the only hard requirement. I would ideally like it to be fullscreen and have a space on the side for widgets.

I'm pretty open to ideas that aren't my own. My primary focus is for this to be an easy site to navigate.
